“Ready to kick off the first full week of May? Here’s a little political satire from Pulitzer prize winner Mark Fiore to settle your weekend…

NewsHour correspondent Spencer Michels has the story, produced in conjunction with KQED San Francisco’s art program “Spark.”

ACTOR: From New York to San Francisco comes word across the wires of a — a — a Pulitzer on the Mark? What’s the story, ink-stained Fiore?”

Day 13 of the April 2013 A to Z Challenge…

I may have forgotten to mention my theme – it is fractals, fractal art, everything fractal up to and including my new book Fractal Dreams! Have a look around my pages and such to see lots more fractals. Also, every Friday I post a FridayFractalFeature (fff, for short) for all to enjoy! Thanks for stopping by and engaging in the A to Z 2013 Challenge! This is my FIRST ever, so I’m pretty excited! So every day I will post a fractal whose title starts with the letter of the day… and perhaps other things fractal related. Some very good A to Z post on writing at M3 Blog

M is for….
MANDELBROT – Benoit B Mandelbrot (November 20, 1924 – October 14, 2010), that is. I also spoke of him in B because he is worth many, many references. He is pretty much considered the father (or is it grandfather?) of fractals. Due to his pursuit of the area of math that has turned into fractal geometry and considering he coined the word fractal, he’s quite the forefather.  There is a joke about his name, Benoit B. Mandelbrot. It is, “what does the B stand for in Benoit B. Mandelbrot?” Congratulations if you got it without an explanation. Not many will (even I had to ask, don’t feel bad). The answer is immediately funny and appropriate if you know that a fractal, in short, is a self similar shape or form that is recursive (repeats) no matter how far you zoom into it. (See also T is for… for another word that refers to this very property *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*.)
MOONHIGH, MARGOT 1942, MARTHIG, MARIO837 – some awesome fractalists I’ve met on DeviantArt.
Mandelbulb3D (MB3D) – is another FREE fractal generating and rendering application that seems to have taken the fractal world by storm. With it, fractalists are able to create images, 3D images, as have never before been produced. They are, of course, based on fractal math, but apparently MB3D is quite user friendly. I have ddown;oaded it, but have not tried it yet. It seems to become quite addictive almost immediately, so I don’t want to forsake all other apps at this time. I have put MB3D on hold in my arsenal for a while.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a mathematician, so please forgive the uneducated tone of my definitions. I am an artist, so I try to explain the math of fractals to the best of my (limited)  ability.

Anything BUT Blue Monday!!

Howdy gang! Hope your Monday brings you oodles of joy and cyberdeals and all other things that make you smile!! Just in case not, I have a little something that might brighten your day, or at least a few minutes of it!!

I watched this guy on America’s Got Talent, voted for him every time he was up for a vote. And thanks to me (NOT) and his really special talent, he won that year.

Then a few years later, I took a trip to Vegas just to see Terry Fator or the brand new Cirque du Soleil honoring the Beatles (my forever favorite musicians)… Terry Fator won out and I’m totally happy!! Not only did we have excellent seats, second row back, just slightly to right of center (from our perspective). Terry stated right up front that it was OK to take pictures and such – you know how some of these big stars can be… well, then, after the show we got to meet him, have our pics taken with him and of course I let him know how many times I’d voted for him! He was very personable, and since we were the last in his meet and greet line, we got to chat a bit longer. Then,  I sat waiting for my sister who’d gone out to smoke, in a small coffee shop just on the main path. As Terry walked back to his dressing room passing me, he met my eyes and gave me a special wave, just for me!!! I felt so special, and I am totally in awe of his skill. He is AMAZING!!!

Hope you enjoy!!!

PS just a footnote on the book release: it has been pushed back to perhaps mid December. It seems my publisher is so good at breaking software (that can’t stand up to her intense requirements), without her even trying, the Library of Congress (that’s THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, folks) had a software fail and they are still trying to get back on their feet. So, due to delay in getting out LCCN number, which MUST go hand in hand with the ISBN #’s when a book is published… Well, you see where I’m going with this. But am I BLUE about it? NO! I mean NO NOT AT ALL!!! I have full faith the book will be out soon and will be well worth the wait. Stay tuned for the rest of the story folks… most likely this will be the first public place I’ll announce its release, on that you can count!

On another Blue note ;), you may remember several years back in Santee CA (just outside of San Diego), it was a Monday, in fact it was January 29th, my birthday, and a young lady took several rifles and started blasting away at the schoolyard directly across from her home. I don’t remember the details (not important, anyway), but I have always felt it became my duty, on that very Blue Monday (I think there was a song?) when that girl took out several teachers and students (I was living in San Diego at the time), it became my duty to ensure that the only thing blue about Mondays any more would be either some humor or some beautiful art…

So, that is the purpose of the video (no blue humor, btw) above and the piece below… hope your Monday is FAR from being a sad or bad kind of blue Monday!!

The Buddhakats

B is for… blue
M is for… monday

Well, it is a mixed bag of sad and happy today. Let me give my shout out to all those Libra’s in my life whose birthdays are all within a week of one another…

First, there’s my mom (RIP) who passed about eight years ago now – her birthday is today…
then my younger sister celebrates one of the BIG ones on Oct. 2, that ends with a zero – – just 2 figures, now, she IS younger than I, but not by much!!!
Then my special set of musketeer (4 of us) friends with whom I have managed to still hang out since sooooo long ago, from those glory days of high school, in the all girl Catholic school, where we all graduated together and hung out with our boyfriends, and you know… all the stuff that good friends do together, including rooming together after graduating and moving out on our own… OK so TWO of them celebrate their Libra-ness, one on Sept 29 and the other, (I hope I’m right), is Oct 3. Three of us drove to Alaska, in the early 70’s, shortly after the Al-Can highway had been completed (if it even was completed then). Then. later in the decade, two of them (the 2 Libras, actually), traveled to TX and had a real fun but scary time, finding themselves in the desert one night, with some bandoleros who just might have killed them, if they’d stuck around!!

Now, on the other end of the emotion spectrum, I just found out that a dear, very dear, virtual friend from DA, died last week, at only 48 years of age, Mark was a prolific artist, and within the last year had received a whole new blazing fast mega mega mega GH and GB system, and he became even more prolific. And good. He is one of the best fractal artists I know, and even though he posted many images a day, he always titled them with his tongue deftly in cheek, but not. I REALLY miss him. He lived in the UK, and even though we never met, we got to know each other and I can honestly say, I love you Mark!!!

So, for today’s fractals, we are going to take a look at some of his outstanding work. I think he had an accident, early in his life, that somehow handicapped him, but you’d never know it seeing his art!

If you want to check out his gallery you can see all his stuff in his DA gallery. His screen name was kram666 and he loved talking about all things mystical, mythical, cosmological, astronomical and even spiritual. This entire post is dedicated to and featuring Mark, my dear, dear friend, whom I miss the hell out of already!!!

So, I hope you enjoy the images from his gallery I’ll be presenting… and just for the heck of it, one of Mark’s favorite bands was Pink Floyd, so our musical choice today says it all…

and now prepare your eyes for some MAGIC…

Mark lived with a fox family in his backyard, which he faithfully photographed for well over a year…

Mark loved quoting some of the philosophers of life:
“Nobody knows who I am or what I do. Not even I . ” ~Don Juan Matus
“Think for yourself and question authority.” ~ (?) Mark, maybe? (it was his signature)
“To learn how to use your head, you have to go out of your mind.” ~ T.Leary
“Turn on , tune in , drop out…” Timothy Leary
““There are three side effects of acid: enhanced long-term memory, decreased short-term memory, and I forget the third.” ~ Mark (?)

You are missed, Mark. I hope it is as spectacular as you’d hoped!!! But you didn’t stick around for December 21, 2012. Hmmmmm…
Comments from Mark, with one of his fractals: “Mayans used the numerical numbers 13 and 20 as the root of their numerical systems and hence, the Mayan calendar ends on which represents the number 5,126. Given that the calendar begins on August 11, 3114 BC they Mayan creation date or “fourth cycle”, 5,126 days later is 12/21/2012 marking the mysterious end of the Mayan calendaring system.”

Be the Peace…

Greetings, all…

A friend has shared the following in a journal post on his wonderful DA site.  The title of his journal, in blue below is a link to his actual journal. In the interest of global peace and harmony, I have linked you to it.

‘Be the Peace’ Meditation Hour

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 20, 2012, 7:19 AM

by Kancano

Hi everybody, this journal has the purpose to both inspire and invite you to join in one of the largest globally-synchronized meditation and prayer events in history! In celebration of the International Day of Peace, hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals worldwide will join together as One for a worldwide “Be The Peace” event. “Be The Peace” will feature public meditation/prayer events in over 380 cities worldwide from Friday, September 21st, 2012
6:00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m. in local time zones, creating a profound planetary wave of peace. For more information about the Global “Be the Peace” event please visit [link].
At the end of the “word” part of his journal Kancano composed a lovely photo montage, so I hope you will journey over to see it.
Also, Kancano shares the link to BeThePeace which is the source for information on this event for Friday, 09/21/2012, International Day of Peace.
I hope you take a moment to read about this worldwide event/wave and possibly feel/experience the spirituality as the peaceful energy moves through your own part of the world.
Metta love to you all, and thanks for stopping in…
PS If I try real hard, mayhaps I can publish my FridayFractalFeature during the specified hour of my local time. I have a feeling that sharing my fractal inspirations might be a fruitful contribution to the international energy of peace.

a mused meandering…

a mused meandering

a poemy day
ought to be fey,
yet way way cerebral,
to ensure,
what twain shall be severed,
or what paen is sought,
or it is naught.
mindful of “lost”
whence even the best of fellowship falls
into dreary ponderings,
to exclaim
if naught but what is alive be dreamt,
then shall, in the end,
the very misfortune one would flee,
best become the very escape one seeks.

aught, we feel,
ought it be bound to or abided by,
be it pithy or poor.
ours be not but hours of dew,
whereby beyond which worlds of words,
anon, albeit done, do.

so behold the challenge of review,
wherein the pleasure of treasures
beguiled, becomes,
nay, lost not, anew.

places’ acts, muses’ wanderings
shall retell that when befalling…
clouds’ coherence, lights darkened
tales’ woe, lest harkened.

so celebrate the challenge of review,
wherein the pleasure of treasures
beguiled, becomes,
nay, lost not, anew.

This piece is inspired by my bard friend, Sir Gigoid’s “Avuncular attempts at erudition“…. Methinks some  may find my poetry too cerebral, as do I, at times. It is, however, a style I rather enjoy – ie opening to the the muse, who then, will allow me to let their words pour forth… My challenge is to translate from the ephemeral language of the muses into something somewhat resembling the words/thoughts in which we humans might find some meaning, imagery or emotion. To me, it feels like the voices of the classic poets from Homer and Sappho, Ovid and Virgil, Keats and  Shelley. Without, perhaps, some of the strict disciplines they employed, such as form and rhyme. This piece, for example, I could tell in plain English in 50 words or less. But what would be the fun in that‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽
Anyhoo, only recently have I found strength of heart to put my words out, in full view. Of that, I am proud!!  My muses and I have many voices. I hope I can delight a few, at least, who dare to read.
